The species is known for its peaceful nature towards other species that it cannot fit into its mouth. However, it is not suitable for most freshwater tanks because it requires hard, alkaline water conditions. It thrives best in a Tanganyikan community tank, where it can coexist with larger species that it does not consider as food.
