The Neon Allen’s Damsel, also known as the Neon Damsel, Allen’s Damsel, Alleni Damsel, or Blue Star Damsel, are found in the Andaman Sea west of Myanmar and Fiji. Named after the ichthyologist Dr. Gerald Allen who is the world’s authority on damselfish, the Allen’s damsel occasionally makes it way into the aquarium trade. It may get confused with the Blue Gold Damsel (Pomacentrus coelestis) which also shares the common name, Neon Damsel, however the Allen’s damsel only has yellow on its anal fin. The Allen’s damsel also is an overall metallic blue-green color rather than just blue, unmistakably making it the most striking of all the Pomacentrus damselfish. Allen’s damsels are not as robust as some of their counterparts, so we would not recommend them for biologically immature aquariums. It is best practice to keep damsels in small-medium sized groups (6+ individuals) to help avoid nippy behavior toward other tank mates, but such behaviors are complex based on various environmental and individual factors. While some species in the Pomacentrus genus are known to be a bit more aggressive, in our experience the Allen’s damsel is less aggressive. An adult Allen’s damsel can reach a size of approximately 3″.
